When you have a big care, it can cause you pain. We saw it somewhat implicitly in «Without you I cannot have happy days» in the last post's song, and today we have it explicitly in 你是我胸口永远的痛 | Nǐ shì wǒ xiōngkǒu yǒngyuǎn de tòng, "You are the eternal pain in my chest", a Mandarin song.
There are two lines of thought about how to add this syllable:
- I met it «Around Christmas or sometime after it, probably at least before Easter» in 2012/2013;
- I translated it to English way later, in the night between Jan 8 and 9 2018, writing it down the following morning;
- Anton Xie translated it to Hakka, and his translation will be included here;
- In both translations, the "double voices" were addressed later by me, on Aug 15 2018 as I included those translations in this post in the afternoon; note that the Hakka part was only ready (modulo ruby texts) around 15:35, and at 16 I finally start the English part, and at 16:12 I'm done and inserting the Sappho fragment.
There are two lines of thought about how to add this syllable:
- Team Bergk + Edmonds + Campbell goes for an extra article τὸ before νόημμα;
- Team Lobel-Page reads κάλαισιν as a full dative;
- However, in the critical note, Lobel-Page observes that «κάλαις ὔμμιν cod. A, quo retento τὸ νόημ[μα] c[on]i[ecit] Bekker. quod quamvis cum grammatici verbis aptius congruere videatur, tamen ob ν ἐφελκυστικόν positionem effecturum recipere noluimus», that is «codex A [reads] κάλαις ὔμμιν, keeping which Bekker conjectured τὸ νόημμα, which, though it seems to match the grammarian's words better, we anyways didn't want to take because of the nu ephelkystikon making position», i.e. that -ν in ὔμμιν creates a long syllable by position and that for some reason puts Lobel-Page off from accepting this amendation; I have no idea why that would be a bad thing;
- I was able to find the whole treatise, and after the quote I see «ὁμοίωϲ αἱ Αίολικαί, ἀποβάλλουϲαι τὸ ν καὶ φυλάϲϲουϲαι, τὴν ἐν ὀνόμαϲι δοτικῆϲ πληθυντικῆϲ ϲύνταξιν ἀναδέχονται», «Thus the Aeolian women, throwing off the nu and keeping it, construct the syntax of the dative plural in nouns»; now, I don't see any nouns here, so maybe ὄνομα is used to mean "words", but then which word is he referring to, κάλαισιν or ὔμμιν? Since he mentions both "throwing off" and "keeping", I'd expect one word to have it and one to not have it, and since "throwing off" is first, I guess the Campbell&co. version does match this better than the Lobel-Page version;
- It is true that, since apostrophes weren't often written in antiquity, κάλαις could easily have been taken as a normal Attic dative by an inexperienced reader, who would thus be confused at "throwing off", whereas with κάλαισιν ὔμμι no such confusion could arise, but that is beside the point; I guess I'll just follow the majority; I'm also wondering why it's "cod. A": is there a cod. B and maybe more? I asked on Latin Stack Exchange; also, Campbell informs us it was Ahrens who ascribed this to Sappho, since Apollonius himself fails to ascribe it.
- The printout from 22/5/10 has manuscripts of the Italian and Latin manuscript versions below, exactly as reported below; those seem to have been lost in the following printout from 4/7/10, but I assume they weren't made after it, because it wouldn't make sense for me to keep using an outdated printout;
- The blog Italian and the English simply appear in the 25/7/10 file, meaning they were made between then and 4/7/10, the date of the previous printout, since the previous file was from 30/5, and wouldn't have been able to bound the date of an English translation anyway since it has none;
- The original Latin appears in that file, which was thus made in the same date range;
- Then it gets modified in the 16/8/10 file, meaning it was fixed to the below blog version between that date and 26/7/10;
- Unless I missed something, the diary doesn't mention anything relevant to this fragment.

A: In the night there’s wind I’m in that wind
What is it I have?
Clouds speak with wind wind speaks with me
With whom can I speak?
B: I don’t think of the past don’t speak of the future
Who am I waiting for?
Don’t want you to get this don’t fear to be told
To let love hush in wind
A: You’re the eternal pain in my chest
North snow’s floating here in the southern sky
My love froze up in cold cold wind
B: You’re the eternal pain in my chest
Pain in my chest
I leave tonight’s dreams to tomorrow
