Rouge (aka lipstick, I guess)

OK, so today we have a portion of a Japanese song. I met this specific portion in this video shortly before Aug 21 2013, the full song is this one. Anyway, in the process of transcribing the whole video, I attempted a transcription of that part, and then for the fun of it I produced a singable Chinese translation. The Japanese transcription had one error (just relistened, it's totally the singer's fault), in ll. 3-4, which are supposed to be «どんな酔いしれた / 人にでも | Donna yoi shireta / Hito ni de mo», but the rest matches the captions of the full song video. 13/4/20 I change 不管 and 虽然 to 无论, since they're both "mo" in Japanese. 11:15. So let's see what came out of this!

Two anthems

The title says it all. Today we have two national anthems:

1. The Chinese 义勇军进行曲 | Yìyǒngjūn jìnxíngqǔ, "March of the Volunteers", translated to English in August/September 2011 and to French within the following summer; more specifically:
   
   • The 16/8/11 diary entry says «ipse domum maneo et nipponizo et sinensizo, あめんぼの歌うた、色いろは et 坂本さかもと龍りょう馬まの手て紙がみ vertere conans, inde hymnum sinensem vertens» (I myself stay home and do Japanese and Chinese, trying to translate Amenbo no uta, Iroha, and the letters of Sakamoto Ryouka, and then translating the Chinesee anthem); this resonates with my memory; it could be argued that "vertere" wasn't clearly used to mean musical translations, but then again, I distinctly remember how I started from the Wikipedia translation and deciphered the original, so would I really call that "translation"? And besides, why would I ever put the anthem at the start of my file if I wasn't dead sure I'd translated it first, when I knew it by heart back 4 years prior to starting the study of Chinese? Because I was dumb, apparently :); the "translation" in question wasn't singable, but very literal (and also not too correct); I found it in a file dated 16/8/11 18:16;
   • The 28/7/12 11:01 file has a blank space reserved for this anthem; The printout of that file has an English version which the mega-intro dates to 25/7; this is exactly the singable version below; or does it? Well, it does specifically state that I did «dall'inno nazionale a Wǒ rúhé zhīdào nǐ ài wǒ mandarina non so se e-sclusa o inclusa […] il 25/7» (from the national anthem to the Mandarin Wǒ rúhé zhīdào nǐ ài wǒ, I don't know if including or excluding that, […] on 25/7), but in the very beginning it says «memorizzai – caso più unico che raro – anche la traduzione Inglese. Quando poi in seguito, grazie ad un video di Youtube, migliorai di molto la pronuncia […], modificai la traduzione Inglese perché stesse nella musica, ottenendo quella sotto proposta» (I memorized – more of a unique than a rare thing – the English translation as well. When then later, thanks to a Youtube video, I improved my pronunciation a lot [with respect to the disaster that a Mojibake Pinyin had caused for me], I modified the English translation so that it fit the tune), and also «La prima traduzione in musica dopo l’inno nazionale è dal Giapponese, ed è Everlasting» (the first musical translation after the anthem is from Japanese, and it's Everlasting), so… which is it? Did I make a musical translation all the way back in the first year of High School, then forget about it and remake it? Or is the 25/7 version the same as the much older version? We will probably never know…
   • That printout also has the French version, from 25/7, and it's the below version save for the different lines «Avec chair et corps, que / Construons nos Grand Mur nouveau!», the line «millions mais un cœur» missing its starting «Nous», and the missing last line, which I guess I had to figure out since «Vite» is not exactly straightforward to obtain from «Marchons», and in fact I seem to remember a version with «allons» or something like that squeezed in there.
   • The first version of the translation appears in a file is from the 5/8/12 19:26 one; curiously, it has the line «Every man is forcibly expelling his last cry»; looks like we have a change that got undone in further files; or did I translate this twice, once on 25/7 and once in the 5/8 file? Also, the French is missing.
   • By the time the next file rolls around, i.e. 18/8/12 15:27, we have the below two versions.
2. The Japanese 君が代 | Kimi ga yo, "Your reign". I translated it:
   
   1. To Chinese between October and Christmas 2012; more precisely, it appears in a 16/12/12 22:48 Google file from session 88, session 87 being from 14/12/12; in that file, we have the first three options for the last line, namely «而苔藓生在上时», «而苔生在上边时», and «苔生在上边时候»; these are also found, along with the rest of the translation, in a 22/8/13 15:19 file, whereas the fourth one, namely «苔生在上边之时», first appears in a file created 22/8/13 11:25 and last edited 1/9/13 15:41, so it was conceived between 22/8 and 1/9/2013; on 26/9/21 at 15:57 I created the current version of the last line, replacing the first version, which is what I'd opted for when first posting this, perhaps not knowing the other alternatives existed; the attachment of a 17/12/12 21:15 mail has l. 2 as 到千代到八千代, a change that was apparently soon lost, and that I will not reimplement;
   2. To English ~10:40:30 9/1/18, a translation which, for whatever reason, I forgot about when I originally posted.

Technically the Chinese one has more verses, but I only translated one. Let's see!

The knock-knock beetle

So today we have a Xhosa song, Qongqothwane, aka "The click song", though the title means "the knock-knock beetle". I'll come back to that title as I explain this song word by word with the help of a native Xhosa speaker, and finally provide correct spelling and translation – you wouldn't believe the amount of misinformation there is on the internet about this song's meaning. But back to the translations. Now, I have an English and Chinese version. Dating is not easy, because I had to reformulate them because of having blindly trusted an unjustified translation.

1. The first version in Chinese was done… OMG; so, «sometime between March 10 and April 3 2013», as per the old version of this post, is bullshit, plain and simple; «between 28/3 and 4/4», as this note would have it, is probably based on the position within the translations files, since it's immediately followed by a poem that was started on 4/4, and going back up through the file we find a bunch of stuff and then a 28/3 poem; this position is not really indicative, since the file was only put together way later; what is indicative is that this translation is found in Session 128 from 8/4/13, the previous one dating to 3/4; this version is given as the original, with the lyrics and English literal rendition as Novi, my Zulu consultant who doubled as Xhosa because the two are closely related, concluded they should be; she was rather wrong, but I found out much later; the translations note linked above literally only changes 的->地 in the seleqabele line;
2. Then «sometime between Jun 4 and Jun 10 2017» I made a first English version, which is the middle version below, from this other translations note, with a bit of extras like the filler text from 1:55-1:56 on 24/3/23 and partly from the note, and «Just passed by a while ago» for the seleqabele line; there is no screenshot evidence for that dating, which is based on assuming that the translations in the note are in chronological order; I then corrected the seleqabele line of that to the form of the middle version below on Jan 23 2018 at 17:06; correspondingly, I also made the Chinese version «它已在快过这条路» at 17:18:30; the notes don't tell me what the rest of the middle version would have been, but I'll assume this was just fixing that one line and leaving the rest as in the old version; talking about the Chinese here; I will check the screenshots eventually;
3. Then the Quora post happened, and I guess that's what prompted the new updates in the 7/9/18 version, aka middle-2 below, which is what happened in the drafting of the post;
4. But «it seems I still need to rework these things». I decided to move the analysis to this post on the decipherment blog. Here's the literal translation that follows from that work:

   «Now that we have a correct translation, time to get to the translations, which I reworked past 23 on 7/9/18 into the final version below», except the final version is from 10/9 apparently, there are two draft saves from that day and one of them has middle-2 and the other has final; actually, the 7/9 version and the 10/9 11:29 version are middle-2, the 10/9 11:32 version is middle-3, and the final version is from 12:13 10/9.

Today we have breaking news – so breaking, in fact, that the translation may not be complete. It's a beautiful Cantonese song called 今生今世 | Gam1-sang1 gam1-sai3, "In this life, in this world". I started with the second half (last 4 lines) of the chorus at 10:04 on 16/8/19, then finished the chorus the next day by 18:45, and translated the first 5 lines of the first verse little before 22… and here I am, writing this at 00:13 on 18/8/19, meaning that's all for now. I hope to complete it by the posting date, which is the 20th. As I formated this draft at 0:26, I added another line. 0:42, one more line, and 0:43 I change "I" to "Just" in there. Complete verse 1 by 13 on 18/9/19, do almost all of verse 2 between 21 and 22, then edit it in, and only one line is missing, though the rhymed part is a bit meh. Time to finish this. In the end, I convinced myself that "this whole life through" was fine (compare "We talked the whole night through" here), so I reformulated the first rhyming line a bit, did the last missing line (which was the following one), and the translation was complete by 22:58 on 18/8/19. 22/12/23 12:46 I change For you -> Due to you -> Thanks to you, consequently sending the "give" to the next line for a better tune fit. Let's see it!

Aconteceu

Again, no link to the previous post… except maybe love. After all, today's Portuguese song Aconteceu, "It happened", is a love song like last post's Piel Canela. That's a link right? Anyways…

1. I translated this to Chinese shortly before 17/10/16, I think; well…
   
   • I actually translated it within 1/10/16, as evidenced by the fact this note contains the translation (in the below original version) and has a comment from 1/10/16 12:16 asking my then-corrector what he thought about it; I have a list of notes, presumably in order of last edit date, which puts this note between notes containing a translation from 29/8/16 and three from 2017, so assuming that order matches the translations we have a very small time window for this translation;
     Unfortunately I didn't send it to my corrector except via this note, and notes now display a last edit date with no year (in this case "last edited March 14") which isn't very helpful because what if I edited it later for whatever reason? And did I really wait so many months between making the note and asking for comments? I would actually assume I finished the translation on 1/10 and commented as soon as I posted the note, TBH;
     Actually, the note version isn't the original, as per the tabs below; indeed, the self-chat has a message from 30/9/16 17:14, where the original version is found with a few missing linebreaks and the typos 张大张得; another message from 17:23 gives the change of l. 4 to the Fb note version;
   • On 17/10/16 at 17:00, my corrector replied to my email, proposing the "corrections" version below, suggesting the four options 真发生了/就这么发生了/突如其来/乍然而现 for the title, and then choosing the one shown below, the only one not to fit the tune :);
   • I then elaborated the corrections to fit the tune in a reply from the same day at 22:57, and the result was the "corrected" version below;
   • In the evening of 7/9/18, I had a few comments, and thus made some changes to that version, leading to the final version below, modulo the much later last comment below:
     
     1. The line "Sem un sino pra tocar" was «也没有任何预警» in the revised version and «也没有一点铃声» in the original. Literally, it means "Without a bell ringing". Now, is that supposed to mean an alarm bell (hence the 预警, "warning") or a church bell announcing a wedding? I probably hadn't thought of this back then, and right now I think this is the way to go, so I'll try rendering that in Chinese.
     2. 悄然 is a literary word that can mean both "sorrowfully" and "softly". The latter is the meaning here. Can we find another word with that meaning that doesn't create the ambiguity? There is no sorrow at all in mansinho after all… I originally had 悄悄, and the single version of that doubled adjective seems to also mean "anxious", which is extraneous here. From "mild" I find 温和, «mild, gentle, soft», and that's what I'm going with.
     3. No idea why my original 长大 was substituted with 升温, which should mean "get warm" (character by character it's raise-warm), whereas my English had "grew". In any case, given "espalhar" means "to spread" (an Italian relative, "spagliamento", refers to water from a river overflow spreading on the ground), I will use a verb found in a song by dear old Wang Jie, and render the line as 也有流传流得慢慢.
     4. Which also includes the fact that "devagarinho" is the superlative of "devagar", "slowly", so there isn't an idea of "gradually" in there, which is what 逐渐 gives if Wiktionary must be trusted. Can we avoid a doubled adjective perhaps? Yep, we got 慢速.
     5. In the drama line, my original translation was «但是没有内心戏啊». The corrected version, «没有剧本的剧情», besides not fitting the tune by being one syllable short, is pretty explicitly referencing plays, aka dramas, because it says "There wasn't the storyline of a play". The word "drama" in Portuguese, I'm sure, can be used to refer to a play, but also to just refer to dramatic events, that is in a psychological sense, and that is the use made here IMO. I should look "dramma", the Italian cognate, up in my Italian-Chinese dictionary to see what comes up, but 内心戏, "psychological play", is a pretty good guess here IMHO. Actually, I just looked up "dramma" on the Wiktionary, and "predicament" came up, which sounds like a good choice, and is translated to 困境. I guess I need to find a way to fit that to the tune, because 内心戏 with 3 syllables already required a hole-filler exclamative particle, and 困境 only has two syllables. Let's see what I can pull off.
     6. And now for the bed line. First of all, what does "fazer a cama" mean in Portuguese? "Make the bed", literally. But what about the context? I mean, a bed is totally out of place here, so I think there should be a metaphorical sense to this expression, but which? I can't find anything for Portuguese directly, but if I take the Spanish calque, it also has the sense of «Preparar el terreno en sentido figurado para algún propósito que se tenga en mente» (prepare the terrain in a figurative sense for an intention that one has on their mind), which fits the context and also resonates with what I was guessing for the meaning of this. So how do I say that in Chinese? Probably not «只有时间来做床啊». "Pave the way" is kind of the same, and it appears to be 铺路, so I'll go with that for the moment, but maybe I can find something better with the help of Quora or Stack Exchange. We will see.
     7. Also, "Without the earth having stars" is definitely a reference to the star at Jesus's birth, but no way that can be transparent in Chinese;
     8. Finally, on 9/12/20 I realize 突如其来 means "sudden(ly)", which isn't really in line with the song, so, going through 就有发生，曾来发生，意外而现, I eventually make it 未经宣布.
   Finally, while captioning the video on 10/7/22 at 16:19, I change 到底->最后, because that stupid dàodǐ, which is used only in question as I realized way later than this translation, is still in it.
2. Then, on 12/7/19, I looked at the spoiler in the index a little, and Aconteceu came under my eyes, and I thought, «Why don't I make another version as a column-filler?». And I started almost right away, completing it the following morning: a French version. Sorry English speakers, the literal translation is walking the plank :).
3. Then on 29/11/20 in the evening I simultaneously start translating it to English, Sicilian, and Hindi. The first two are complete within the evening. This item will be used to relate changes to the English version. 8/4/23 15:38, as I cut or caption the video with these last three translations, I change «That the novels and our mem'ries» to «That our novels and our mem'ries».
4. This one relates anything that happens in the Sicilian. Somewhere between the start of the translation, in the evening (21:30 to be precise) of 29/11/20, and the addition of these three translations to the post, on 8/12/20 at 19:15, succidiu became succiṙiu. I suspect I did it during the addition. At any rate, the line «E succidiu/succiṙiu» was then changed to «Nni succiṙiu» on 26/10/21 at 3:53.
5. The third one, aka the Hindi one, starts with half the first part, then the second half is done in the dead of night, and the second part is done the next day around 13. The drama line proves problematic in Hindi because all the translations I find of "drama" appear to be eminently theatrical, but on 9/12/20 my corrector dispels this myth with «Don't do drama» = «Nātak na karo», so at 12:36 I translate that last line.
6. But wait! There's more! Specifically, we have the Latin next. Let's hear IAFI: 「 On 23/2/23 at 23:16-17 I go Accidit -> Accidit hoc -> Accessit hoc -> Hoc accidit -> Verō accidit, then the next day around 19:20 I finish the first four lines:」. After completing the Spanish and near-completing the Greek before dinner, I finally get to this one after dinner at 22:23 on 9/5/23, and complete it within 22:57.    Now, the Blog version originally had some vowel quantities marked incorrectly: histōrjīs memōrja mȳthistōrjæ (three os are short), mūndō (u is short); it also had two choices to be made, namely speciente/tuente and sōlum/ūnum; on recording day, I fixed those, and some vowel quantities led to fixes; firstly, the choices were made respectively at 11:51:03 and at 11:46:54, choosing tuente and ūnum; the fix of memoria and mȳthistorjæ and historjīs (with their os) led to me undoing the semiconsonantification of those j, all between 11:44:13 and 11:44:45; the last desemiconsonantification was that of grātjās, where the j was just pointless; finally, at 11:46:42 I made, or at least formalized, the change adfuit->adfvit, for ease of singing.
7. «The night after starting the previous, at 0:19, I think of Έτυχε αυτό, then at 0:21 I find Συνέβηκε due to thinking Έτυχε may be too AG. The next evening I come up with Τίποτα δεν τ' ήγγειλε at 19:23 and Και κανείς δεν το περίμενε -> Κι αν κανείς ... at 19:25, and then I send this to Kika at 0:38. The following day, thus 25/2, she replies just before 13 proposing Τίποτα δεν τ’ ανήγγειλε, Τίποτα δεν το πρόβλεψε, Τίποτα δεν τό ‘δειξε, because aggéllō in MG is formal. I'll go with the middle option, thus reaching: / / Συνέβηκε, / Κι αν κανείς δεν το περίμενε. / Συνέβηκε, / Τίποτα δεν το πρόβλεψε.», says IAFI, probably with the same first four lines as below, but I'm too lazy to check. Shortly after completing the Spanish, on 9/5/23 at 18:24, I come back to this and almost complete it within 19:19, sending it to Kika at 19:38. Here are the differences between that version and the one below, modulo any post-10/5/23 Ki-corrections:

   • «Ήταν με τις ιστορίες», which Kika corrects to «Ήταν από τις ιστορίες» in her full reply, and I elide that day at 16:00;
   • «που οι μνήμες / Να διηγούνται συνηθίσανε» as a better-rhyming alternative, but Kika prefers the singular one, possibly because the Portuguese has the singular;
   • «Αργοπόρησε, έμεινε», again, full reply;
   • «Και γι' αυτό δεν ήταν δράμα», again, full reply;
   • Missing penultimate line, since I didn't know how to render "fez a cama", and again, full reply; the first version «Του χρόνου τα υφάδια γερά» doesn't fit the tune much; replacing χρόνου with καιρού (idea from 16:33) helps a ton, and was approved by Kika at 10:48 on 11/5/23.
   Adding it in, I realize I lost the louvor-amor rhyme in the last section, but Σαν σε κάθε αγάπης βαθύ (10/5/23 23:55) doesn't convince me. I think I'll leave the rhymes in the last three lines, and the καλωσορίσει-ανθίσει-ωδή near-rhyming triple.
8. But of course, since I've mentioned a Spanish version, we're not done yet. IAFI only has «9/4/23 17:22 I translate the first line in three ways: Y se pasó -> Así pasó / Pasó así». I end up choosing the middle version when, on 9/5/23, I decide to complete this, and do so between 18:13 and 18:24. The alternate titular line «Pasado se ha» is from this morning (10/5/23) at 11:48. On 2/10/24 at 10:27, MdH responds to my multi-option translation by choosing Así pasó, given as option 1, and en el cielo, given as option 2. No further change. I nailed it :). So that's what you have in the MdH version, and the alternate version is just the other options.

Did I translate this song just to Chinese or… to what other languages? Err… dunno… Today we have a Spanish song, Piel canela, which I translated to English around 18 on Jan 11 2018 (wait, that was the late translation? And where is the Chinese one?), and to Chinese within Jun 3 2017 when I posted the final version on Stack Exchange (oh yeah, now I remember the post. Right). Honestly I have no idea why "el ancho mar" was translated as 广大的海岸, "the vast coast". Maybe I meant 海洋. Changed it around 18:25 on 7/9/18. Let's see!

E oggi chiudiamo la serie di alpini con In cil e jè une stele (in cielo c'è una stella), canzone friulana tradotta in Cinese non più tardi del 22/6/16, data di ultima modifica di una nota che contiene quella traduzione e quella di Barco Negro già pubblicata sul blog. Poi, facendo l'indice per lingue (chissà se è già apparso…), penso che tradurla in Italiano è una bazzecola, e difatti in 20s lo faccio il 25/5/19 alle 22:41. E oggi continuiamo la nostra serie di canti alpini (in Italiano stavolta, niente Inglese) con La bomba imbriaga, tradotta dal Veneto al Cinese il 10/11/2016. Per la verità, convertendo il pinyin senza toni che avevo in hanzi, ho visto che 怯懦 è una pessima scelta per "bechi", cioè "cornuti", quindi vediamo di migliorare alle 17:50 circa del 7/9/18: 这种怯懦的人->这种王八蛋就. Ricordo che l'originale prevedeva come verso finale qualcosa tipo 一下爆炸的炸-, con quel zhadan spezzato, ma il mio correttore ha detto meglio di no, ed è l'unico cambiamento che ha suggerito. A ben vedere, quel cambiamento si registra in un file del 2/12/17 alle 17:05, dove si trova anche 如果就是个桶，如果是充满葡萄酒的个桶 in luogo di 如果是个桶，如果是充满葡萄酒的一个桶. Ma a me pare che per farla stare meglio nella musica l'opzione migliore sia 如果就是桶，如果是充满葡萄酒的一个桶, pensata alle 0:27 del 22/11/21. Vediamola!

Signore delle cime

Surprise! The post is in English because there is an English translation, but the title is in Italian because I'm lazy and don't want to edit the index to reflect the title change :). That said, today we start a series of 3 "canti alpini" (songs sung by Italian soldiers in the world wars) translated to Chinese. This one, Signore delle cime (Lord of the summits), has an English and Chinese translation of just the first half, both done sometime in autumn 2011.
More specifically, the oldest version, which is the Original below, first appears in a file last edited 31/10/11 12:45. Then, in a mail sent to my then-corrector Zhongjing on 9/11/11 at 16:29, we find an attachment with all three below versions. The diary mentions that, on 3/11, I first met the guy in person, and he came over to my place for dinner. My guess is that, on that occasion, we corrected a bunch of Chinese stuff, including this translation, which produced, let's say, version 2b (that is version 2 below with line 4 replaced by 你在山顶上要求 and 你 in l. 2 instead of 您, apparently due to a misunderstanding of something he said), and then I went over his comments and proposed to change 你在山顶上要求 to 你要求了那山上, and 您 to 你 in the last line, to be consistent with that misunderstanding. It would also seem that I completely forgot about this proposed line change, since the blog originally started from a version 2b using 您 and fixed 您在山顶上要求 to the version below, as will be seen in a second.
Truth be told, I think «You requested from the mountains» can't actually mean what I thought it could mean and wanted it to mean, and only means "requested while being on the mountains". This also caused my Chinese corrector to miscorrect that line as «您在山顶上要求», "You requested on the mountaintop". Time to rework those translations around 12:15 on 7/9/18. I will totally omit verse 2 from this post. The rework led to «One of our friends / You asked the mounts to give You». I then proceded to completely forget about this, and re-rework that part on 4/7/24 at 15:04, and I prefer the newer version, so I'm rolling with it. Except for indexing purposes I need to keep that distinct, so I will also get rid of the a-wander at 23:18 on 6/7/24, and "so high" -> "highest" at 23:20 :). Let's see!
