Heartache

Today I bring you two Chinese songs, both titled "Heartache". Indeed, one is the "Cantonese version" of the other, meaning title and tune coincide, but the lyrics have nothing to do with each other, and one is in Mandarin and the other in Cantonese. I met both in my first year of studying Chinese.
The Mandarin one I translated into English and French. More specifically:
  • The Sci q English translation appears in the Science notebook after the date 24/10, after that lesson's notes are oved;
  • The "Original" English translation was sent to my corrector in an email on 24/10/11 at 22:55, together with 4 other songs, and is the original version below; therefore the translation dates precisely to 24/10, and the same goes for those of this other song, which appear before the ones of the present one in the Science notebook;
  • We then have the middle version, first appearing in a 31/10/11 13:56 file (not in its twin from 12:45, mind you, guess I added it a bit late), and remaining till the last file from that date, from 15:31;
  • The next version is from the 25/11/11 16:50 file, and changes the following things from the middle version:
    1. «I’ll keep from crying for you to say» -> «I'll keep from crying for you, and say»;
    2. «Well, who knows th’ you of tonight’s dream» -> «Who doth know th’ you of tonight's dream»;
    3. «Since now, I no longer am myself!» -> «From now on, I’ll never be myself!»;
    4. «I no longer am myself!» -> «I’ll no longer be myself!»; this persists untl the 7/12/11 11:49 file;
  • The next file is from 28/7/12 at 11:01, and gives us the final version modulo the next two items;
  • The following variant lines take their form from below in the 18/8/12 15:27 file, not having it in the previous 5/8/12 19:26 file: «From now on, once more, I'm not myself!», «Once again I'm not myself!», and «Carried by a heartache dream drift off!»; these are actually found handwritten on the printout of the 28/7 file, so I guess I just copied them late;
  • Finally, 17/1/23 13:50, I change «I'll keep from crying for you to say / "Goodbye"» to «I'll keep from shedding tears to bid you / Goodbye», and then to «While holding back my tears, I'll bid you / Goodbye» on 21/1/23 at 19:09 as I implement this here;
  • Around midnight between 8/4 and 9/4/19 I tweaked «What is then love? / What is mandatory?» and «L’amour, c’est quoi ? / Quoi est obligatoire ?» into their present forms;
  • The French version appears as below, modulo the change mentioned in the last English item above, in the 18/8 file, while having a blank space for it in the 5/8 file. Actually, the 28/7/12 11:01 file has the blank with "Adieu" in it, so this was started before that date. The rest of it was done on the printout of that file, where we have the following different lines: «Pas en pleurant pour toi, je dirais» closing section 1, «Durer Être eternels» for l. 4 of section 2, and the eliminated variant beginning «Emm'né par un rêve» for the very last line. 5/4/22 15:06, while I edit this stuff in, I notice that douleur is feminine, so not mon douleur but ma douleur.
The Cantonese one I only translated into English.
  • The song was decoded and translated literally wihtin 9/12/11 22:10;
  • However, the musical translation is only first recorded in a 31/12/11 file from 10:21, which goes over the corrections made on our meeting on 19/12;
  • The diary only mentions "Cin class", which refers to trying to decode the Classical Chinese 愚公移山 tale, for 9 11 13 and 14/12, suggesting those days were entirely devoted to it; which clashes with the email from 9/12, of course… so make of this what you will :);
  • My todo list from those Xmas holidays only mentions the corrections to be metabolized, no mention of this song specifically, and it starts at 24/12, so I can safely assume the musical translation was done by 24/12;
  • I would guess it was done before 19/12, in fact;
  • I will not, however, call that version "original", because the corrections point to another, older, more incorrect version having existed; indeed, converting Pinyin back to characters, the file has the following corrections:
    1. 昨日似水流 / 把我这痴痴的心爱 is more likely two sentences, with the second having no subject with 心 and 爱 separated;
    2. Something similar happens to 但那美景不会经常 / 为何仍然分离?, where the first has an implied verb 有, “be there”, or 出现, appear, and means “But that beautiful scenery will not always …”, and the second, with 为何 why, has implied subj. we;
    3. 风酸 sounds strange, but my interpretation is probably right;
    4. 无语 means “not knowing what to say”, and 问苍天 means “asking God [the reason for …]”;
    5. 你哪天真的心 / 仍荡漾在心中? is probably not a question; the {second} 心 is probably that of the author, while the first 心 is probably the [girl’s] heart; the phrase is thus probably “That naïve heart of yours is still creating ripples/waves in my heart”, i.e. “still means a lot to my heart”;
    6. 沧桑 is commonly used to describe (old) people who have suffered a lot, so we can render it as “very sorrowful”;
    7. 当初 is probably “promise”, as in Chinese songs it is a common situations that there are background promises that something makes you wish to undo, in this case the 沧桑的苦面.
  • You may have noticed that some bits of the song quoted above don't match the below; that is because I was apparently using incorrect lyrics;
  • I don't know when I found the correct ones, but they are first recorded in an MDBG saved file from 30/4/12 11:11, in session 1; here is a list of all the wrong lines:
    1. 那远去的光;
    2. 似是她的抚慰;
    3. 昨日似水流;
    4. 把我这痴痴的心爱;
    5. 让我风酸的笑面;
    6. 看你苍桑的哭面;
    7. 悔约我的当初;
    8. 为何偏偏相见一回.
  • This text was sent to the corrector in a 10/5/12 21:37 email, along with another musical translation, which is basically the final version below, except for "calling", which I will now implement in the place of "comfort" (that particular correction somehow didn't end up in the 28/7 file), and «Why do I always want to see you» in place of «Why d’I always see you moments», which happens between an 8/5/13 22:08 file and a 9/7/13 12:22 one.
Here goes.

Dave Wong’s “Heartache” (Cantonese,
31/12/11)

In the long night
Who’s in lonely heartache?
That far-away light
Her comfort seems to be.
Yesterday like water flowed…
Love my daydreaming heart!
With my very warm hands I will hug
You tight.

Though the north wind blow strong,
My hands will still stay closed.
Let me, rigid wind’s smiling,
Roam always in your heart.
But that beauty’s scene won’t always...
Why are we still apart?
Tearful, wordless, asking God,
Distressed.

In the long night
Who’s in lonely heartache?
That far-away light
Her comfort seems to be.
Yesterday like water flowed…
Love my daydreaming heart!
With my very warm hands I will hug
You tight.

Though the north wind blow strong,
My hands will still stay closed.
Let me, rigid wind’s smiling,
Roam always in your heart.
But that beauty’s scene won’t always...
Why are we still apart?
Tearful, wordless, asking God!

That naïve heart of yours
Still storms within mine own.
Seeing your great woe’s crying
My promise doth undo.
Why do I always want to see you
But am still apart from you?
That I let you wander lone
Forgive!

“Douleur”, de Dave Wong

L'amour, c'est quoi ?
L'impotence c'est quoi ?
Silents on s' regarde,

Silents on s' regarde,
Je crois que j'ai compris.
Je vais, lent, envers ta face,
Je te tiens la main,
Pas en pleurant pour toi, je vais dire
“Adieu”.

Je crois que nôtre amour
Va remplir tout le monde,
Je crois que nos serments vont
Durer par toujours.
Qui sait que le tu de mon rêve
Un temps n'était pas toi ?
Je ne s'rais jamais moi-même !

Je crois qu'un vent de loin
Peut emm'ner ma douleur,
J’ crois que l' ciel du crépuscule
A l’amour dont j'ai besoin :
Seulement ça peut toucher ton cœur.
Personne peut comprendre que,
Portant mon rêve de douleur j' dérape !

In the long night
Who’s in lonely heartache?
That far-away light
Her calling seems to be.
Yesterday who left behind

My hands will still stay closed.
Let me, wind and snow's smiling,
