The man of many skills and the Sirens

And today we move to the Odyssey to finish our Homer series with the introduction to the Odyssey and the song of the Sirens, the latter being from book 12. Again, Latin hexameters.
  1. The post used to say «from summer 2009 with edits in summer 2012, perhaps some | to mark where I gave up on making a line scan. This time we also have caesuras marked with ||.». This is complete baloney. Indeed, the first place we even see the song of the Sirens separated from the big passage Odyssey XII ll. 174-201, which it was included in and meant to be translated as a part of, is file 3 mentioned below, and files 1-2 only have two lines of the opening; I assume this wrong dating is due to the general intro the translation corpus mentioned below makes for all the Homer translations;
  2. The first trace of the opening of the Odyssey, in the form of the manuscript of ll. 1-2 reading «Vérsutum ínsece, Músa, virúm mihi, plúrima quídem / Quí passúst Troiǽ postquám sacram árcem erépsit.», appear in the diary for 3/2/10, saying that I translated them thus as I walked during PE class;
  3. This aligns with the fact that file 1, last edited 3/2/10 14:26 and created 2/8/2009 10:48, only has precisely those two lines of it, in the form given below as original; it does change erepsit to evertit in l. 2, but the rest is pretty much as in the manuscript; as with all three of the numbered files mentioned here, there are 6 copies of it;
  4. Then we have file 2, last edited 5/2/10 18:41 and created 3/2/10 14:35, where absolutely nothing happens to the translations of this post in that file;
  5. The diary informs us that on 5/2 I translated both passages to prose except for words I didn't know, and looked up what Greek music was supposed to be like back in Homer's time, and that on 6/2 just before lunch I looked up the missing words; this explains both the prose translations of file 3, and its name "Pezzi_da_musicare_el-lat": I was literally planning to musicate these things (and the opening of the Iliad) according to Ancient Greek music styles; not that I ever got to that though; indeed, the CoTAP outright states «statui in musicam non ponere» (I decided not to musicate); anyway, file 3 is last edited 6/2/10 22:37 and created 5/2/10 18:14, and it gives the remaining lines of the original version; it also implements the change of file 2 (see above), and changes "quidem" to "vero" in l. 1, and changes ārcĕm ēvērtit to ārcem ēvērtit, i.e. implements an elision there in l. 2;
  6. A newfound CoTAP (Corpus Traductionum Aliorum Poematum) file edited 16/8/12 12:07 starts from the 6/2 version and gives a bunch of edits, dated to various dates from «anno 2011 aut forsan 2010» (year 2011 or maybe 2010), dates which include 16/4, 16/1, 16 or 26/1, 4 or 6/2, 13/3, and 26/2, and with a bunch of changes from 22/7/12 gets us to the 22/7 version below;
  7. It then proceeds with changes on 23-24/7 to get to the final version, save for the final item below; now, a 24/7/12 13:23 file has an intermediate version between 22/7 and final, where, besides the item below, the only changes are the older «Sḗd nēc sī́c cŏmĭtḗs || sērvá͞it, cŭpĕrḗt bĕnĕ quā́mvīs;» at l. 6 of the opening, and the incorrectly scanned “Hḗia͜ ăge͜ ĭḗns, || ō clā́rĕ Ŭlī́|xēs, glṓrĭa͜ Ăchī́vûm, for l. 1 of the Siren song;
  8. Finally, as per the previous version of this post, «16:34 24/8/19, checkup time, I notice I can avoid the hiatus «se esse opima» by using "sese", an archaic form, and eliding it».
