Anywhere

So I'm scratching my head here as to how to link today's song, Anywhere, to last post's song. Oh yeah, now I know: «Make you always happy / I only wish to do so» vs. «Waiting for tomorrow / Just to see your smile again». OK. So I picked this song for an English-Chinese translation back in Feb 2012. I translated it:

1. To Chinese in several pieces:
   
   1. First, on 27/1/12 during Lucrece class, I included the following in my notes:
      
      我在dengdai明天

      从我blistered的心
      你在哪里如rúguǒ你在
      anywhere?
      
      Yes, I wrote it exactly like that, in the middle of the notes;
   2. By 1/2/12 I had done the incomplete version given as original; more precisely, I did the chorus save for the last line, then took the third-to-last line and came up with the alternatives «从我起水泡的心» and «从我的破碎的心» (I sent the latter in), then made the last line in the sequence of forms «任何地方», «任何方», «任何地», and finally «任地方», and finally did the first two lines of the verse, with the second one soon becoming «但当我思她我觉它成长»; at some point between then and 18/2, the fourth line had become «只为再见你笑面», which is what I sent in at 15:18 that day;
   3. The next day, my corrector replied at 12:19, and suggested the corrected version below; my comments to that at 14:04 that day were «Concerning 微笑 and 记得那是很久以前 I will change it, but as for 任何地方 and 但当我想起她我就觉得它成长 the problem is that way it doesn't fit the tune. For 任何地方 I have 3 syllables, not 4, and only 10, not 13, for 但当我想起她我就觉得它成长. Here's a video of the song: link, to which he replied on 26/2 at 16:12 saying «任何地方 -> 任一处» and «但当我想起她我就觉得它成长 -> 但想起她就觉得它成长»;
   4. This leads us to the version from the 28/7 11:01 file, which for some reason lost the 小面->微笑 change;
   5. The translation seems to only have been completed much later; indeed, the 5/8/12 19:26 file, whose version is given below, is still missing lines 2 4 5 of verse 1 (where I'm sure the line 费力忍受这什么 started out with 费力忍受的 and was corrected by my corrector, but I find no record of this change, and ditto goes for the line 我十分思恋你 changing into that from the original 我很把你思恋) and has several missing words in verse two;
   6. Actually, the printout of the 28/7 file has the 28/7 version completed by hand as the 18/8 version below, save for a few changes I will list at item end; this would seem to have happened on 26/7, based on the mega-intro not mentioning me skipping that particular song, so Idk what happened; I mean, the printout was probably in Carate when, at the start of August, I got to Dorga and resumed work on Chinese and Japanese, but would I really have remade this? Or is this 5/8 file an indication that I did part of this on 26/7, copied it, then finished it but didn't copy the missing part?
      
      1. 我必须抵制 instead of 我却必抵制;
      2. 为一丝小的灯光 instead of 为了小一丝灯光, but that's a recent change as per the item below;
      3. 但我能用快步走来以前 in place of 但我能用快步走来以后, probably due to misremembering the tune;
      4. 很疯狂–我却只 in place of 很疯狂，却知道;
   7. The 18/8/12 15:27 file finally has the complete version; from there to the blog version, there is only a much more recent change, on which I quote the old version of the post~: «Writing this post on Aug 15 2018 at 21:51, I realized a better option than «为一丝小的灯光» is «为了小一丝灯光», which puts the "little" with "ray of light" instead of just "light". Time to correct it»;
   Note that the 18/8 version used the second-round simplification 邦助, which I decided to replace with the first-round form 帮助 as per the manuscript;
2. Then to French, as a column filler, between the 5/8 and 18/8 files mentioned above; and this fits perfectly with a 26/7 manuscript on the printout only reaching me in Dorga between 5/8 and 18/8; said manuscript differs from the version below in the following lines:
   
   1. «Mais quand je pense à lui je l’ sens grandir» in place of «Mais quand je pense à elle je l’ sens grandir», which I'm pretty sure is ungrammatical, but whatever, I'll probably remake this from scratch once I actually understand the song;
   2. «Je ne sais quoi faire» instead of «Je n’ sais pas quoi faire»;
   3. «De mon cœur ainsi feriblessé», which is just a deleted alternate word;
   4. «Où es-tu dontc s’il y a toi», which is again just a deletion.

In our world

OK, the two last posts were a bit of an intruder, and today's Mandarin song, 在我们的世界里 | Zài wǒmen de shìjiè lǐ, "In our world", links well with «In a world like this» from the song from just before those. Last post does fit in well in the middle though, to kind of tame the unbearable grief of the previous few songs. I met this song no later than Dec 9 2011.

1. I translated it to Italian during English class on 5/12/11, in the below original version, surprisingly before the Italian (I'd have expected I started with English which was already my default for Chinese songs by then and then used Italian as a column filler); by the attachment to a 9/12/11 email, any differences from the below have been eliminated, save for «Perché sotto le stelle or frustrato son», which entered the blog post and is mentioned below), and «Insistente, ovunque io cerco te e i miei ricordi», for which the same holds; «insistente» becomes «incessante» on 19/12/20 at 19:08, and «Perché sotto le stelle or / Frustrato son?» gains its current form on 27/12/20 at 14:33.
2. I translated it to English soon afterwards, during the same English class, in the original version below; I remember an early version with a different third line, perhaps the literal «Do you already not care for me?», which might have been rejected during the class, as suggested by the crossed-out "you" in the scrapped beginning "Do you" for the line; by the 9/12/11 email mentioned in the item for the Italian version, everything is like the final version below, except for the 27/12/20 14:32 change of «Frustrated feel» to «Feel disappointed»; in fact, during the 6/12 class, the intermediate version «In this starry night why do I frustrated feel?» appears;
3. I translated it to Hungarian in… «Sep 2012»? Old post? I think you have some 'xplaining to do; the files are from 3/10/12, and the diary doesn't mention this, so why Sep? I say it was 3/10; anyways, it happened when my corrector was my guest and I gave Hungarian a try:
   
   1. I first translated it unsingably, giving version 1, from the 3/10/12 21:29 file "hu_ex.doc";
   2. Version 2 is the corrected unsingable version, found in the 3/10/12 22:38 file "hu_ex_corr.doc";
   3. Then we set it to music with teamwork, which is version 3, also found in that 22:38 file; the Youtube video appears to mistakenly sing "az éz világomban" and "kereslek";
4. Then we have the Romanian version, surely from no sooner than May 2012, and no later than Nov 12 2012, when a note containing this and a number of other Romanian translations, appears to have last been edited, and I expect this to be from after the Hungarian version; OK let's look at what files I have:
   
   • A quadruplet of files, one from 12/10/12 19:12, one from 14/10 14:24, and two from 15/10 (17:25 and 18:35), give what is version 1 here; there is a printout of the 17:25 file with "Ție spun" annotated on "Îți spun";
   • A 17/10 22:32 video has me singing the song and is captioned; the text is identical to another file, last edited 18/10 18:17 but created 16/10 21:29, which is probably what I was reading from while making the video, and bears version 2 save for "me simt frustrat"; the changes between video and new file are contracting îți eu into îțe and only correcting "me simt frustrat" in the captions; the new file, w.r.t. the old files, changes "îți spun to "îți eu spun", "Pe bune mai n-avem un trecut?" to "N-avem mai un trecut pe bune?", and "Mi-amintesc mereu de trecutul nostru, / Nicicând n-opresc, mereu tine caut" to "Mereu d-al nostru trecut mi-amintesc eu: / Nicicând n-opresc, tine caut mereu";
   • My first Youtube video of this song, which was also posted to Fb on 14/2/13, differs from a 6-version file from 14/2/13 by "grijă de mă" and possibly "deja n-o ai", and the errors "me simt frustrat" and "d-al nostru tracut"; that file, along with a 29/10/12 18:57 file, bears version 3; my transcription of the video, errors included, is version "Video 1";
   • Version 4 was the one originally posted to the blog, and the one after the corrections in this Fb note (which appears to have been published on 27/11/12 at 19:36 and was saved as a doc on 18/11/12 at 22:45), so it seems those corrections weren't brought into the Youtube video; the note actually has "nicicând m-opresc", possibly a typo, and "te mūlt iubesc" with mult stretched over two notes, suggesting "mult mult" to avoid the stretch; btw, 27/12/20 14:35 I change «De ce mereu văzând stelele / Mă simt frustrat?» to its current form; On 11/11/24 21:09, as I'm going to the choir rehearsals, I sing this version, more or less, and at «Ușor fu a uita mă» I think I should use a subjunctive, so «Ușor fu să mă uit(ă)», where the uncertainty on the form is cleared up at 21:11 by looking at the inflection table, revealing uit is the 1sg form and the 1sg form is uiți;
   • The Video 2 version matches the more recent video of the song, thus not including the post-27/3/21 changes.
5. Then there is the Zulu version, from between Jan 8 2013 (date modified of a file containing this version) and Dec 7 2012 (pretty sure I didn't know my corrector before then, and I wouldn't have tried my hand at Zulu without a corrector); the video shared on Facebook has a comment suggesting «kwezifiso zami», but I changed the original «Eyodwa imfiso wami» to something else, as you can see below; I think this change was thought up while reading said comment very soon after 8/1, but I'm not sure; also, why I wrote ngikufūna with that macron is beyond me; I hope I remember to correct it when I edit this stuff in; not sure where I got either ngonke or zonke, but it's supposed to be onke, fixed 23:31 14/2/21; also, «Yíni phánsi kwembasa / Ngishaba njalo?» got its current form at 14:41 on 27/12/20. Within 13:20:12 on 27/3/21, however, I realize I used plural nina instead of singular wena, so I fix that for the recording. On 5/5/21 I try to analyze that super-long «Ubusidlulileyo ubusakhona hhayi», and kinda fail. So, ubusidlulileyo would be the relative form of dlulile, "have passed", in class 14, but the relative concord is obu-, not ubu-. The translation given by isiZulu.net is «isikhathi esidlulileyo», lit. «time that has passed us». Ubusakhona presumably wanted to be the negative «isn't there anymore», with extra negation hhayi right afterwards, but there is no negative prefix in it. Surprised my consultant said nothing… anyway, -sa- is "still" and becomes "anymore" with the negation, "have" is rendered as "with", so "we are no longer with past"… a- negative, -si- "we", -sa- "anymore", -na- "with", obusidlulileyo "that which has passed us". So I come to «asisanobusidlulileyo», which makes never-ending German words shy away and competes with goshdarn Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch for length. And that happens at 13:14 on 5/5/21, and it fits the tune perfectly. But that -si- is pretty pointless, so I'll stretch wethu into wēthu and go with asisanobudlulileyo. 13:15, and that is the decision. I don't think I'll rerecord it, but who knows :).
6. Finally there is the Mende version, translated with great effort between 26/12 and 27/12/20, except for a "Yɛla i bi gɔhũnɛ" version of l. 1 from 15:06 on 23/12/20, in any case a loooong time later; then again, Mende is kind of a recent addition to the roster of languages I know about (well OK, a year and three months, but still), so it couldn't have been that much earlier.

Se il cuore fa male, la canzone è triste

Oggi, dopo tutto questo immenso dolore, "domiamo" un po' il nostro tormento con una canzone giapponese, 夜来香 | Yeraishan, che per la verità è una versione giapponese di questa canzone cinese che ho postato eoni fa. Ho scovato questa versione su Youtube il 9/5/18 intorno alle 16:15, l'ho tradotta in Indonesiano solo il 2/10/18 intorno a mezzogiorno, poi cercando il video (quello che avevo trovato era sparito) ho scoperto che c'era una seconda strofa, e intorno alle 19:20 ho tradotto anche il pezzo diverso di quella. Ho intenzione di tradurla anche in Italiano (onde la lingua del post), ma per ora non l'ho ancora fatto. E niente, la sera stessa, nel giro di 9 minuti, la traduco, e poi il giorno dopo, grazie ad illuminazioni StackExchangeiane che nel frattempo la community ha deciso di cancellare dal sito, abbiamo due aggiustatine all'Italiano e all'Indonesiano. La riga «Il fior che ognor ricordar fa» viene cambiata per ragioni musicali il 28/9/21 alle 22:58. Vediamola!

Sadness without bounds

Keeping on our pain theme, we have today the Ukrainian song Одна калина | Odna kalyna, "A guelder-rose". First of all, the guelder-rose is a bush, not a flower. That said, the story of this song is long. Way back in my second year of Chinese study, over the Christmas holidays, the woman who tended to my grandma took some vacation days and a Ukrainian one substituted her, so I loaded Youtube, and, for fun, searched for "Ukrainian song", and yes, you guessed it, I landed on this song. Then, just last summer, in 2017, my other grandma also had a substitute tender from Ukraine, so I looked for the song again, learnt it, and tried to crack it, with some help from the tender. Over Christmas, I decided to give this song the final blow, and Stack Exchanged the everliving frick out of it, finally getting ready for translation. And sure enough, on Jan 6 2018 I translated it to Chinese, and on Jan 8 I translated it to Romagnol, both with minor tweaks way later. [These presumably included 一个荚谜->一丛荚谜 and 想要的请拿走 -> 想要的都拿走.] Don't be fooled by the dancing in the video: this is a very sad song, and the post's title is the first line of the song, minus the repetition of "sadness". Going on with pain, we have the Mandarin song 上帝也哭泣 | Shàngdì yě kūqì, whose title matches that of the post, «which I met sometime in 2011 and translated into English and Italian soon afterwards». Alright, let's get into this:

1. The Italian translation was, surprisingly, made before the English, as per both the mega-introduction that will one day appear in The history of my translations, as well as the page of the science notebook containing both translations sided in their "sci q" versions; it first appears in the 31/10/11 files mentioned below, in the "30/11" version; the 25/11 mentioned below then gives us the corresponding versions, and then by the 28/7 file we get to the final version, save for the change «Sebbene or ti son lontano» -> «Se anche or ti son lontano», a reversal which happens between the 5/8/12 19:26 file and the 18/8/12 15:27 file;
2. The English translation was made on the science notebook, probably on 24/10, definitely between 24/10 and 7/11/11, and first sent in on 24/11/10 at 22:55; actually, the 21/10 diary entry states «Ibi textum carminum sinensium duorum proximorum a subtitlis copio» (There, i.e. at home after coming from school, I copy the text of the two next Chinese songs from the captions), which makes me suspect that by that point the translations of Ocean and My future is no dream were complete and these two songs were the present one and Heartache; in fact, the 22/10 entry states that on that day I translated the first two lines of the present song; apparently I did Chinese on 23/10 too, meaning this translation took 3 days, and the one of "Heartache" was done on 24 entirely, or maybe the other one was started while this one was still going;
   
   • The 24/10 notebook version is the "sci q" version below;
   • The one sent in a month later was the Original version below;
   • By changing «Because thie world's gotten cruel, so that / There is snowfall still in June!» to middle 2 version and «Please forgive that I never can give spring to you» to «Please forgive that I ne’er can give spring back to you», we get to the version found in the 31/10/11 files, which are one from 12:45, one from 13:56, one from 15:29, and one from 15:31;
   • The middle 1 version is the one from the 25/11/11 16:50 file and the 2/12/11 20:27 file;
   • The middle 2 version comes from another series of files, which goes parallel to and intertwines with the series mentioned above, having one file from 27/11/11 15:53 and the other from 7/12/11 11:49 file;
   • The next file is from 28/7/12 11:01, and contains the Blog version save for one line, «Why does nobody want to bear», which becomes the Blog version only between the 8/5/13 22:08 file and the 9/7/12 12:22 file.

Silently crying at dusk

Last Deng Lijun song from our grief series today, again from this video (1:03:19-1:05:58): 黄昏里 | Huánghūn lǐ, "At dusk". I started the English translation in the night between 17/2/19 and 18/2, and translated 3 lines, and then finished the whole thing on 21/2. Before we see the result, however, there are a couple of text issues I want to point out. Feel free to skip the bulleted list if you aren't interested - but read at least item 7, because it gives a translation of an alternate version. Note: video 1, video 2, video 3.

• In l. 2, video 3 has 斜阳 in at least one repetition, but both other videos definitely have 夕阳, which is what I went with;
• Video 2 has l. 3 as 犹相系, “still relates itself”, which sounds like BS in and of itself, and plus, we’re talking about dusk and 又向西 means “heads west again”, so that is definitely the right spelling;
• Video 3 writes 教 where the others write 叫 in l. 4, but a causative is way more fitting than “teach” IMO: how would the setting sun “teach” her to remember whomever the song is addressed to?
• Video 2 writes 心坎, but all videos seem to have 心海, and video 3 definitely has that, so that’s what I went for;
• There are some oscillations on the number of 你s and 我s where there are many, but the audio seems to always give 3 on l. 1 of the choruses and 2 on l. 3, so that’s what I went for;
• 你把我忘记 vs. 已把我忘记, the former seems to be captions-only and not cross-video, so the latter is my choice;
• 时常 vs. 时刻 in all choruses: video 2 has 时刻 in the captions, other videos caption 时常, all of them seem to have shichang/shicang most often, though I think I heard at least one instance of shike; going for 时常 anyway, though it’s harder to sing at speed; I did translate both versions for chorus 1 though, and the 时刻 version reads «Well you know I / During twilight constantly;
• In chorus 2, all videos seem to have 斜阳, which agrees with the captions only in video 3, while the others read 夕阳; going for 斜阳.

With that out of the way, here we go!

Who will love me?

We continue with grief from love today, and also with Deng Lijun, and with songs from this video (37:04-39:17 today) with 谁来爱我 | Shéi lái ài wǒ, "Who will love me". Now there are various versions of this with various numbers of verses: I've seen 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 videos. The details of the differences between these are confined in the Chinese songs post. For this post, I follow video 5, the one I linked to with the song's title, which has all the verses.
I started the English translation in the night between 17/2/19 and 18/2, and finished on the 18, partly in the morning, partly in the afternoon.
There is also Ånton Xiè's Hakka version in this post, which has the first 3 verses in my text, but is missing the fourth. Asked him to translate that one too on 30/4/22 at 17:22, he responded with the extra verse in the Original version below at 5:22 on 1/5/22. I randomly found it on Facebook and decided to include it here. He also changed 激 kit "attack"(?) to 涿 tuk "to drip"(?) between 14:01 and 13:31 on 1/5, probs close to 14:01. Apparently the video changed the lyrics up a bit. I will include both Anton's original and the video's version. The latter will be displayed by default since it's the one I found the video of. Speaking of that line, «无情仰这样涿涯我» is missing a syllable w.r.t. the notes of the tune, as I realized while I was trying to record it. In that process, shortly after 13:00 on 4/6/22, I changed it to «无情仰形如何涿涯我», which I do believe is a mistake, and then I fixed that to the below version. I unfortunately accidentally recorded the video's version instead of Ånton's, because my memory had the former.
